Faster digitalization puts greater demands on IT infrastructure

In recent years we have seen explosive growth in solutions and work to support digital transformation. However, digitalization will never again move as slowly as it does right now. There will be a constant need for more flexibility and agility to keep up with future developments. As the speed of change will continue to grow, so will the demand for IT infrastructure to support it.

“The ability to react quickly to future changes will become more important than ever. It will call for a new way of thinking, one that goes beyond the technology itself,” says Stephan Andersson, head of hybrid IT at HPE in Sweden.

When it comes down to it, all forms of digital transformation, whether it concern smart TVs, cars, or large data centers, require three key components: computing power, a physical location to store the data, and a way of moving the data from one place to another. In reality, this means servers, storage devices, and networks. But there is also a change on the market regarding how to purchase the IT needed to support the transition and address the needs.

“We see that the number of companies who want to invest in owning their infrastructure is decreasing; instead, they prefer to consume their infrastructure as a service. This means servers as well as storage and network solutions on-demand as they turn towards a – digitalization-as-a-service” observes Stephan Andersson.

Launching a new generation of servers

The ‘as-a-service trend has quickly become popular when it comes to all types of digital transformation. Mainly because this model addresses the need to increase agility and flexibility as well as enabling businesses to scale up and down in IT capacity and adapt their infrastructure over time. The ability to specify the digital solutions that you need and keep abreast of technological advances with just a monthly cost is attracting more and more companies as they realize that they need to be more digitalized from end to end, all the way to the customer.

“The overall increased need for digitalization will result in heavy demands on the underlying infrastructure. That is why HPE together with Intel has launched a new generation of servers based on new Intel Xeon processors. The power from the new server line makes them faster, more secure, and even better than before. In addition, today’s workloads call for more computing power, resulting in a greater ability to do more with less. All in all, this means that companies who rely on a faster, stronger, and more reliable infrastructure will be able to spend their time working with their data, asking relevant questions instead of waiting for answers. The result will be increased cost-efficiency, higher quality, faster time-to-market, and better customer service.”

Changes in processes as well as behavior

As HPE accounts for a good 40 percent of the Swedish server market, making it the largest supplier of IT infrastructure solutions in the country, this entails a significant positive effect for many companies. However, Stephan stresses that it is not just the technology that should drive companies’ digital transformation forward; they will need to set a clear focus on change in both processes and human behavior as well.

“If new technology and systems are not aligned with the business, there is a risk that they will fail to support the change. That’s why it is of greatest importance to keep laser focus and your eye on the ball when investing in an infrastructure with a purpose to support the business goals. Also, keep in mind the practical consequences: will it support the internal processes and, more important still, will it bring an improvement for the end-customers?”

Look for “buy-in” and understand your customer’s needs

According to Stephan, there are a few simple steps to provide for better buy-in for new IT investments. The first step is to look at the final users and their actual needs. Another measure that is becoming more and more common is establishing steering groups where end users can join and address their needs to support a better user experience.

“This is something that more businesses should benefit from doing. But it is about producing a plan where the technology proves its worth and supports the user’s needs. It is also a great way of laying a solid ground and foundation to help businesses work proactively and better prepare for issues that may occur in the future. We had to fight hard when Covid-19 struck, and we don’t know for sure what the future brings in terms of other disasters; This is why flexibility from an ‘as-a-service provider with the latest technology is becoming a competitive advantage” Stephan concludes.

Growing customer base with increasingly feature-rich Greenlake

With over 1,200 customers constantly increasing in number, HPE continues to grow its As a service offerings in the Greenlake platform. HPE recently launched the possibility of managing storage as a service, and now the portal is being expanded to also offer server management as a service.
