Supercomputing power as a service creating new opportunities for innovation
Ever-growing volumes of data in the wake of digitalisation create new possibilities for data-driven insights and innovation while increasing the need for fast computing power. HPE is now making supercomputing power available for everyone – as a service.
Last year’s events are making it clear how far development has come in tech. The rapid development of a Corona vaccine would not have been possible five or ten years ago. The benefits of the enormous capacity for calculations and analysis available today is also obvious in many other fields. It is no exaggeration to say that it contributes to making the world a better place.

”Alzheimer research is an excellent example of the opportunities offered by modern technology. Self-driving cars is another one. The advanced technology that we’ve been talking about for so long as a vision of the future is now available”, says Anna Granö, managing director of HPE in Sweden.

The common denominator of almost all new and transforming applications is data. Huge amounts of data. Data analysis and simulations are the reasons why it’s been possible to shorten the time needed for developing a vaccine for a new disease. All research and development will be affected by the possibilities afforded by today’s advanced technology.
However, data analysis is also essential for everyday decision-making at most companies and in most organisations. And the more computing power available, the greater the possibilities for driving innovation and change.
HPE is one of the companies in the frontline of this development. Thanks to a collaboration with infrastructure partners, such as Intel, the company is able to provide a line of products that contributes to a better world.
HPC (high-performance computing) or “supercomputers”, as it’s often somewhat carelessly referred to, is one technology field where HPE is active. It includes the hardware and software required for the computations and analyses needed in modern applications, such as the rapid development of vaccines and Alzheimer research, and the efforts towards increased sustainability and the creation of smart cities.
It’s about extracting insights from data to develop the business and stay ahead in the ever-tougher competition.
The need for data and data analysis and associated technological solutions is not found only in specialised fields. All research and development will be influenced and accelerated by the possibilities afforded by today’s advanced technology – artificial intelligence, machine learning and pattern recognition are some of the fields strongly associated with HPC.
And in the rapidly growing digital economy, product and business development in companies must be done quickly, preferably superfast. It’s about extracting insights from data to develop the business and stay ahead in the ever-tougher competition.
Regardless of what business we’re dealing with, there is an evident trend: more and more data is generated close to users and close to various kinds of hardware, even though the data is often processed and analysed in data centres. And most of the data will stay where it was generated. This creates a need for solutions at the edge of the networks to process and analyse data.
Edge refers to IoT equipment and all cases where computing power and storage capacity are found close to users and activities. Special requirements for an infrastructure that’s robust to the edge of the networks, where data is generated, is becoming increasingly important.
”Sometimes, the equipment has to withstand extreme temperatures and intense vibrations. Also, there is a need for 5G to ensure that the communication needed is possible”, says Stephan Andersson, hybrid IT manager for HPE in Sweden.
On top of this, available space is often tight for edge solutions, while these are becoming essential for data analysis and HPC applications. It’s getting too complicated and time-consuming to send all data from edge installations to data centres with super servers. Therefore, selection and analysis of relevant data increasingly need to be done using edge solutions; only the analyses’ results are then sent to data centres.
For modern hardware and software solutions like HPC to run smoothly, there must also be requirements for how the delivery of the solutions is to be done and for consumption models.
The as-a-service trend is, as we know, growing stronger and stronger. That is, IT solutions today are often delivered and consumed by subscriptions to public cloud services. Until recently, this was true mainly for general applications such as customer relations and infrastructure services. But now, advanced technology such as HPC can also be consumed as a service. This means that it will be easier for everyone to analyse even huge amounts of data and to drive innovation – on demand.
