This is how a self-learning and self-managing IT-Infrastructure works

In a society that’s dependent on IT in virtually all parts, keeping IT systems working is a necessity. But now, there is no need for manual supervision and monitoring. Because with advanced machine learning technology, the system will take care of itself.

Each year, technological advances contribute to exponentially increasing volumes of data. More data and knowledge than the human brain can keep up with. Where humans possess intelligence based on living, eating and living in specific environments, all of the other data needs to be collected and processed by machines.

Since humans can not process all this generated data, we need a tool is. And it must be done using infrastructure which is smarter. Not only to do it most efficiently and more sustainable but also learn to do it even better in the future.

Didn’t even need to look at the interface

An IT-system that’s idle will still consume enormous resources. Any company with an IT infrastructure of any kind will know that. And they will also understand that this is a complicated matter and that it might be challenging to grasp, stay on the leading edge and keep abreast of development. Making the time available for handling the core business of the company is therefore valuable.

HPE has developed a tool where artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning form the basis for a system that is mainly self-driving.

”One of our customers called and told us that he hadn’t looked at the administrative interface for months. It had not been necessary,” says Anna Winberg, product manager at HPE Sweden.

The HPE portal Infosight runs on an AI engine that handles the entire infrastructure of the IT system. By being connected continuously in real-time to other systems all over the world, it can proactively solve problems and also present suggestions for improvements.

Should, for example, the system begin to run slower for some reason, it can discover the reason in a short time and provide a recommendation for action, with no downtime.

”For ten years, we have been collecting vast amounts of data and analysing it. Because of that, we can now not only solve problems before they emerge. We can also pre-empt and proactively recommend improvements in the IT environment to optimise infrastructure. Not only for storage but for all parts of the infrastructure. It’s a global intelligence where all connected systems in the entire world gather data points,” says Anna Winberg.

The magic of machine learning

This tool is something of a crystal ball that can see the future, according to Anna Winberg. The portal has many dashboards that let you monitor the load on volumes, or predict the amount of needed future capacity.

”I like to compare this tool to an iceberg. The top that shows is Infosight, but below the surface is the magic of machine learning,” says Anna Winberg.

The development of current Infosight started as early as ten years ago. During 2019, HPE added support for several other platforms, and the goal is that all HPE infrastructure should include support for Infosight.

The basic idea is to make it simple for the customer and, primarily, to allow customers to focus on their core business. IT should just work.

”It should be as simple as possible for the users. They shouldn’t have to dig into the infrastructure, but be able to concentrate on keeping the business running.”
